Internet speed too slow? Consider a private web proxy

Why your Internet connection is so slow? It could be your Internet usage is greater than capacity allocated for your Internet plan or your ISP does not have the capacity to support the subscribed rate due to overselling. If later is the reason for slow Internet connection, then it is time to consider a private web proxy. By having your own private web proxy, basically you pay for your own bandwidth except traffic between your PC and web proxy, e.g. not sharing a fixed bandwidth with all users of your ISP. So, the next question is where should the web proxy be? The web proxy should be in a country with best connection speed using your ISP(even during peak period). For Internet users in Malaysia, the best choice for your web proxy is Singapore. Singapore has the best Internet connectivity in South East Asia and most ISPs in Malaysia have direct/indirect peering arrangements with data centres in Singapore. You can confirm this premise by comparing download speed using Singapore speed test site and Los Angeles speed test site .

How do you know which data centre to use for your web proxy? For Windows users, issue the following commands in command prompt

  • c:\ping <Singapore server IP>, e.g. ping speedtest.sg
  • c:\tracert <Singapore server IP> , e.g. tracert speedtest.sg

You should pick a server from data centre that fulfill the following criteria using your ISP

  • smallest latency, e.g. less than 150ms
  • smallest data lost, e.g. less than 5%
  • smallest number of hops between your PC and data centre
