Question for a developer of financial software : “Should financial software developer emphasize acquisition of financial knowledge or software development skills?”
The political correct answer could be both. However if the financial software developer has to emphasize either one of the areas, what would be the appropriate recommendation? My suggestion is it depends on desired career path of the financial software developer. If the developer would like to move up the food chain in financial industry, then the developer should acquire more financial knowledge, e.g. being certified as Chartered Financial Analyst, obtain a Master of Business Administration degree. The reason is the development job could be a stepping stone. To move up the food chain in financial industry, the final goal is to be in IT management role or marketing/operations role. What do you think?
