Tips for having reasonable broadband service in Malaysia

I define a broadband service in Malaysia as reasonable if

  • uptime is at least 99%.
  • packet loss is less than 10%.
  • most of times(> 80%) connection speed to major countries, e.g. US, UK, Japan is at least 250kbps :(

Drum roll please. Below is tips for having reasonable broadband service in Malaysia

  • You have better chance of getting reasonable broadband service in locations where broadband service is in high demand, e.g. business centres in big cities. One example is Petronas Twin Towers
  • If your connection speed to sites hosted in Singapore is reasonable but not to sites in US and UK, run a private proxy in Singapore. By using private proxy in Singapore, you are paying for premium bandwidth and international links to Singapore.
  • If your broadband service is unreliable, have another broadband provider as backup, e.g. 3G broadband providers
  • Before buying or renting a place, ask the previous occupant about broadband service in that place. It is not abnormal for quality of broadband of two adjacent properties to be different.
  • Be nice to customer services officers and technicians of broadband service provider. Being nasty will not help.
  • Run antivirus and antimalware software regularly. This will reduce risk of “unwanted” programs using your bandwidth.
  • Ask the technician whether replacing your phone line/cable helps.
